Veteran's Day

By Diane Calfee, Chapel Lakes Branch

Did you know the birth of Veteran's Day was 50 years ago?

It all started in a town in Kansas, called Emporia.  It replaced Armistice Day to honor those who served after WWI.  A man named Alvin King, who never served in the Armed Forces, is responsible for renaming Armistice Day.  He was a small town businessman who had a deep interest in the men going into the Service.  He fixed shoes free of charge for those lacking the money, including war orphans and widows.  He assembled care packages for troops overseas, and served actively in the American War Dads.  President Eisenhower signed a proclamation on October 8, 1954 to make Veteran's Day what it is today.
