Veterans' Corner Stand Proud By SFC Bernie Wright, Chapel Lakes Branch
Fellow Members, In a past Coastal Breeze newspaper, I've written to you about being proud and thankful of our American flag, how to present it and how to take care of it. Since that time, I have been watching and checking at different offices on how we are doing. I am sad to report that we are the same or worse than ever. How can we show respect when we leave the flag in a ball thrown in the corner waiting for whoever decides to give it proper care? What I'm really surprised at is there are some offices that do not even fly the flag. I wonder if someone was just too lazy that morning to present the flag that so many have died for. The government regulations state that the flag can be flown 24 hours a day as long as it is illuminated at night and we have offices that do that. If any of your offices have a torn or old flag and you do not know how to get a new one, call me and I will help you. The same goes for how to destroy an old flag. . . just call at 954-433-1269. So, to my veteran brothers and sisters and all Americans, be strong on this issue in your stations and branches. While other countries are burning and disrespecting our flag, we must honor and salute her. Treat her with respect and fly her proudly as many have fought for that right. POW-MIA Flag The Administrative Support Manual has been amended to require the display of the POW-MIA Flag on certain days. The Postal Service must fly the flag on these designated days each year. . . * Armed Forces Day . . . 3rd Saturday in May * Memorial Day. . . The last Monday in May * Flag Day . . . June 14 * Independence Day . . . July 4 * National POW-MIA Recognition Day . . . 3rd Friday in September * Veteran's Day . . . November 11 If any of these dates falls on a non-business day, the flag must be displayed on the last business day before the designated day and left up at night, the flag must be lighted.
