Scholarships, TSP Invite

By Carl Johnson

Scholarships

If you have graduating high school children or grandchildren, they are eligible to compete for two scholarships that the APWU offers.  The first, E.C. Hallbeck Memorial Scholarship, provides $1,000 for each of four consecutive years to students attending an academic college or university.

The second, Vocational Scholarship Program, awards $1,000 annually for up to three years to students attending accredited vocational schools or colleges in pursuit of training for trade, technical, and industrial occupations.

You can call the local (954-792-2161) to have the applications and rules mailed to you, or contact your Steward.  They can also be obtained at the National APWU website: www.apwu.org.  Click on "Departments," then "Secretary Treasurer," then "Benefit Programs," and then "Scholarships."

An independent committee of educators will select 10 scholarship recipients.  The competition is based on high school scholastic performance, ACT or SAT scores, extracurricular activities, and personal qualities.  Two students from each of the five APWU regions will receive scholarships.  Completed applications must be received at National Headquarters by MARCH 15, 2006.  Don't Delay!

TSP Invite

Things have really changed with the Thrift Savings Plan lately, if you like to take an active role in your funds, things couldn't be easier.  Everything is completely accessible by computer.  The "closing" fund values for all of the funds are available on a daily basis, usually after 8 p.m.

If you don't have the time, knowledge, or interest to manage your account, TSP now offers the Lifecycle Funds.  These funds are structured on "asset allocation models" which are based on the period of time you are projecting to retire.  Here is a brief breakdown of the "L" Funds:

*L Income (for those who are preparing to or already are withdrawing their money)

*L 2010 (for hose who plan to withdraw between 2005 and 2014)

*L 2020 (for those who plan to withdraw between 2015 and 2024)

*L 2030 (for those who plan to withdraw between 2025 and 2034)

*L 2040 (for those who plan to withdraw between 2035 and 2045)

Lifecycle Funds work just like other TSP Funds.  Participants own L Fund shares just as they do the other TSP funds.  You can enter and leave the T Funds whenever you want to .  Go to www.tsp.gov for further information.

Meetings

I would like to take this opportunity to invite each of you to attend our monthly membership meetings.  I know the minutes of the meeting and the Treasurer's report are posted on bulletin boards for you to read, but the information given to the members at the meetings is much more detailed.  Also, you can ask questions.  You have a right to know what's going on in your Local.  It's also a nice way to see Brothers and Sisters that you don't get to see everyday.  Even if you can't come to every meeting, if you could attend two or three a year it would be to your benefit.

Meetings are currently being held at the Plantation Central Park Multi-Purpose Center.  This is off of Central Park Drive, Broward Blvd. to the South, Cleary Blvd. to the North.

There are 10 meetings a year, usually on the third Sunday of the month at 9:30 a.m. However, several this year have been changed due to holidays, conflicting meetings, etc. so check your bulletin board or Coastal Breeze paper for exact dates.  Refreshments are served.  Hope to see you there.
