Codification of Your Work Habits

By Bill Pick, Maintenance Craft Director

The Maintenance Department at the Ft. Lauderdale P&DC is finally starting to see the return of the excessed employees to their former occupational groups, but this may only be temporary if we continue doing business as we have been and still are.

Work codes are an important factor in maintaining proper staffing levels.  If you need guidance on proper work codes you need to get a copy of Maintenance Management Order (MMO) 149-98 from management.  Charging repairs or management requested "favors" to 03 or 09 work codes is costing maintenance positions.

The 03 work code is allotted just so much time for completion of the route, if you need more time for the route, write a work order.  Routes also have checklists to follow, if it's not on the checklist and has been requested or needs to be done, write a work order.  If you are issued a senior route, check with your supervisor to find if it was issued to another employee, what has been done and how much time has been used, and, if needed get a work order to cover any time over the route's allotted amount.

The 09 work code is just for the observation (look, listen, and monitor) of operational equipment with minor adjustments, NOT REPAIRS, included.  There should be standing work orders to cover the reactive maintenance (clearing jams, reinstalling belts, loading printers, etc.) on each type of equipment.  If not, write one for each call you respond to.  If the call is a repair that is going to take time, write a work order.  DO NOT claim repair or reactive time on a 09 work code.

It is true that the junior employees will be excessed first, but keep in mind that maintenance management may also move bids to different tours and abolish bids with certain days off to get the coverage they want.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that neither the maintenance management complement, nor their pay, is dependent upon the number of maintenance craft employees.  So you can forget about them being concerned with how maintenance is staffed.

The APWU will argue the finer points of work codes with maintenance management when needed, but first we need to get everybody on the same page.  Don't be too proud to write a work order and insure it has the proper work code.  It could mean your position.
