Dignity & Respect By Jeff Riddell, V.P. EVERYBODY SAYS THEY WANT TO BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND
RESPECT, BUT HOW OFTEN DO YOU DISRESPECT YOURSELF? WHEN YOU LET A SUPERVISOR YELL AT YOU, AND YOU DO NOT TELL
THAT SUPERVISOR THAT YOU WANT A UNION REPRESENTATIVE, THEN YOU ARE DISRESPECTING
YOURSELF. DON’T BUY INTO THAT
CRAP THAT THE UNION CAN’T DO ANYTHING. THAT
IS MORE SELF DEFEATING NONSENSE. THE
UNION CAN DO SOMETHING, BUT NOT WITHOUT YOUR HELP.
EACH AND EVERY TIME THAT THEY SCREAM AT YOU AND DISRESPECT YOU, IT IS
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO YOURSELF AND THOSE AROUND YOU TO FILE A GRIEVANCE.
IF YOU DON’T, NOTHING WILL STOP THEM!
RESPECT YOURSELF. WILL ONE GRIEVANCE STOP IT?
NO!!! BUT MULTIPLES OF THE
SAME ISSUE, WITH THE SAME SUPERVISOR, UNDER THE SAME MANAGER, SHOW A PATTERN OF
ABUSE THAT WHEN PUT TOGETHER ADD UP TO BOOKLET OF DOCUMENTATION THAT IS HARD TO
REFUTE. RESPECT YOURSELF, AND
THOSE AROUND YOU. DON’T ACCEPT
ANYTHING LESS! SOME OF THESE TYPE SUPERVISORS ARE SMART.
THEY FIND OUT WHAT YOUR WEAK SPOT IS, SUCH AS OVERTIME, AND THEY MAKE IT
CLEAR TO YOU THAT YOU WILL GET YOUR OT, JUST “DON’T ROCK THE BOAT” BY
CALLING THE UNION TO SAY THAT THEIR ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR IS UNACCEPTABLE.
FINALLY, ONE EMPLOYEE SAYS “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”, AND FILES A GRIEVANCE. SURE ENOUGH, THEIR OT IS CUT, AND THE CO-WORKERS ARE
NON-SUPPORTIVE, BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF REPRISAL. THE GRIEVING
EMPLOYEE IS OUT ON A LIMB BY THEMSELVES, BEING MADE AN EXAMPLE OF, AND THEY GIVE
UP. THE SUPERVISOR WINS, KNOWING
THAT THEY NOW OWN YOU, AND THEY DO WHAT THEY WANT BECAUSE YOU LET THEM KNOW THAT
YOU CAN BE BOUGHT FOR A LITTLE OT. NEVER WAS IT SAID THAT DIGNITY AND RESPECT DOESN’T COME WITHOUT A PRICE. NEVER WAS IT SAID THAT IT WILL COME OVERNIGHT. IT REQUIRES COURAGE, PERSEVERANCE, AND VIGILANCE. LETTING MANAGEMENT DO YOUR WORK, OR NOT ADDRESSING A CROSS
CRAFT ISSUE, ARE ALL FORMS OF A LACK OF RESPECT. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN! THAT
IS YOUR WORK, AND YOUR MONEY. GO
AFTER IT----ONE CITY OF THIS LOCAL DID, TO THE TUNE OF $16,000.
ANOTHER CITY OF THIS LOCAL REFUSED
TO ACCEPT THAT INJURED CARRIERS CAN BE MOVED FROM ONE OFFICE TO ANOTHER, WITHOUT
ANY REGARD TO WHAT THE MANUALS ALLOW, TO THE TUNE OF 258 HOURS AT THE
APPROPRIATE RATE OF OVERTIME. ANOTHER
CRAFT EMPLOYEE OF THIS LOCAL REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE BLATANT DISRESPECT OF BEING
TOLD THERE WAS NO LIGHT DUTY WORK AVAILABLE TO HER, JUST BECAUSE THE SUPERVISOR
SAID SO. MAYBE THAT
SUPERVISOR WOULD LIKE TO PAY THIS EMPLOYEE THE $17,000+ THAT HAS BEEN AWARDED TO
HER. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ALL THE
DILGENT WORK THAT IS BEING DONE ON AN AROUND THE CLOCK BASIS BY THE STEWARDS OF
THIS LOCAL. DON’T SETTLE FOR ANYTHING LESS! GET WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY YOURS, AS A RESULT
OF COLLECTIVE BARGAINING. NO
POSTMASTER, MANAGER,OR SUPERVISOR HAS THE RIGHT TO ALTER WHAT IS NEGOTIATED FOR
YOU. NEITHER DO YOU! DON’T DISRESPECT YOURSELF! |
