DELIVERANCE By Bill Pick, Maintenance Craft Director On Sunday, March 26, 2006, at 9:30 a.m., APWU Broward County Area Local #1201 President Carolyn Pierce and Vice President Jeff Riddell delivered on their campaign promise of education training having arranged for a meeting between the VMF and MVO employees and their representatives. Present were National Assistant Director for the Motor Vehicle Services (MVS) Craft, Michael O. Foster, Southeast Region National Business Agent Ulysses Coneway and State of Florida MVS Craft Director Greg Dixon. Also in attendance was Miami Local President Cookie Ford and a few of the Miami MVO members. Mr. Foster spoke at length about many different subjects and their impact on the MVS craft. Those topics included: the USPS transformation plan, plant consolidation, promotions, upgrades, protecting their craft's work, ZETA and also included the employees need to show up and work at their job in order to save career positions. Mr. Coneway introduced himself to the members and spoke about how the BCAL grievance procedure has been successful due to the sacrifice and dedication of the stewards and officers of the Local, and encouraged the members to become more involved and educated of their contractual rights. Mr. Dixon was a man of few words telling the assembly to support the Union and the stewards, reminding them that they are the eyes and ears of the Union, to stop being our own worst enemies and to watch our sisters' and brothers' backs. After all the talking was over, the floor was thrown open for a question and answer session. Unfortunately, Mr. Coneway and Mr. Dixon had to drive back to Tampa, and had to leave about 2 p.m. Mr. Foster hung around and the meeting eventually ended about 5 p.m. (at the Shells restaurant). The questions posed by the attendees covered an array of local and national issues, relating to both the craft and the USPS. Some of the subjects covered were accidents, bids, casuals, subcontracting, staffing, overtime, training, PTF runs, etc. Copies of Article 39 section of the JCIM were given out to aid with the Q&A. Even through these men are elected, the one thing that impressed me is that each of them told the members present to call if there are any questions. It was time well spent for those who missed it. I would like to thank the members who gave up their day off and time with their families to attend and learn more about their rights and their Union. We need more educated members in this Union. |
