April 2006 Scraps of Info By Diane North, Editor Sheridan House... Our own community service project is for the Sheridan House and Single Moms. Single Moms rarely get a day of caring for themselves. We thank our Union Sisters out there who did some spring cleaning in their closets. We have received quite enough donations to make this special day a great success. Thank you, thank you, we are blessed. 1201 Retirees, where are you and what are you doing?... Drop us a line and let us know what is going on with you. We would like to print an article to let everyone know what the good life is all about. Please send any information about yourself to: Diane North, c/o BCAL 1201, 6500 W. Sunrise Blvd., Plantation, FL 33313. Wal-Mart blunder... Diversity in Miami must not be keeping up with the news. Don't they know that Wal-Mart is one of the biggest Union busters around? Our very own Human Relations Director, Sandra Munoz, received a thank you for helping with the CFC. Oh no, she received a $20 gift card for...I can't even say it...you guessed it, Wal-Mart!! What is wrong with these people? Quote from Bill Burrus: The elimination of 30,000 jobs at General Motors will have an effect on postal workers. What happens at Wal-Mart -- where workers are treated as expendable commodities -- will have a residual effect on all workers. We do not live or negotiate in a vacuum. Correction for AFLAC... For more detailed information, contact AFLAC's Broward County APWU enrollment coordinators John Henley (954) 781-7272 or Lana Klimek at (954) 643-1732. Paying your dues... You work over an hour each day to pay your federal income taxes. The last 5 minutes of the day pays your union dues! Every day as you rinse the daily grime from your hands during your wash up, say to yourself, "I paid my dues today." Reprinted from the Thumbstall -- Amarillo, TX. Need a Shop Steward?... How long do you wait to see a steward? Do not wait any longer than two hours. Stop being so patient. Management hopes if you wait long enough, you will forget about your grievance. This is what the joint contract application manual says: Normally, 95% of the time, a union steward/employee will be released within two (2) hours of his/her request. If this condition cannot be met, the supervisor will notify the steward/employee of the reasons for the delay. Normally the steward/employee will be released before the end of the tour. However, if the steward/employee is not released within that time frame, the steward/employee must be released immediately upon the beginning of his/her next tour of duty. In the event a steward or employee is delayed until their next tour, the steward/employee should notify the supervisor of the prior request. If you not talk to your steward within two hours, please call the Union Hall at (954) 792-2161 and leave a message stating the date and time that you requested a steward. |
