By Carolyn Pierce, President First Impressions... A special thank you to all who have helped with the transition of your Executive Board. Grievances are being caught up and the scheduled arbitrations are being reviewed. Our "favorite son," former local president and APWU National Business Agent, Bill Sullivan, has been so valuable through this period. In truth, he is a gift that helps this local in so many ways, long after he has moved on to greener pastures. The same goes for National APWU Human Resources Director, Allen Mohl. Their insight and expertise are invaluable to this Executive Board...but don't get me wrong... your new Executive Board is full of honor and commitment. What a gift and pleasure to work with them. I believe that the local management of the eight cities we represent are just "checking us out" as we are doing the same to them. Jeff Riddell and myself have met with the Plant Manager of Ft. Lauderdale, the Postmasters of all the cities we represent, and District Manager Jordan Small. Most of the cities we represent believe that it is good to do what is best for our members and their employees. Some want to push and we will push back. What everyone forgets is that this Executive Board came from the "Norma Ray" decade. We have all stood on the tables on the workroom floor screaming "UNION YES." Management does not intimidate us and we believe in a MEMBER organization. FYI... Sandra Munoz and Dolores Melotto are raising our COPA donations above and beyond others in this National Union. I am trying to organize another first for our local. We hope to host a National APWU Secretary/Treasurer's conference. Our National APWU Treasurer, Terry Stapleton has two or three meetings per year in different parts of the country. That would bring National APWU officers and local union officers from across the nation to attend our local picnic to meet and have a great time with our members and their families (to be scheduled for next year). I hope to schedule a one-day "rap session" with our members. We know that our national officers from Washington would love to come to sunny South Florida to talk to our members. We will probably schedule these sessions on Sundays. Ongoing representations... Our Editor/steward Diane North, is becoming very active in the State of Florida and the Broward County AFL-CIO. If we are politically active nationally and locally it is only a great move for us. Our Maintenance Craft Director Bill Pick has been appointed as a Safety and Health Representative for our National APWU and as I am writing this article he is in Philadelphia taking courses on OSHA. I am so humbled by the participation of our officers in extra endeavors, as well as, you should be. If you see them in your office, thank them for their help. |
