Grievance Savvy By Delores Melotto, Clerk Steward Tour 1 In order for your stewards to do the best job we can for you, I would like to impress upon you the importance of being on the correct operation number. When you are not in your principle operation or are sent to automation, you need to clock onto the proper operation number. If you do not know what operation number you should be on, ask the supervisor in charge of the area you are reporting to, and he/she should be able to tell you. It is sometimes necessary for your shop steward, when we are filing a grievance, to check what operation the grievant or other employees are actually on. When a grievance is filed either on your behalf or for another employee, we always need to get documentation to prove our case and be successful in winning the grievance. All members should be aware of their rights as union members. Do not let management intimidate you. We must stand together and become involved. If your coworker asks you to be a witness because a supervisor is doing bargaining unit work, do it (just as long as you did observe the supervisor doing the work). The next time you might need a witness for being harassed or for another important reason. |
