Veteran's Corner VETERAN'S NEWS By Diane Calfee, Chapel Lakes Branch Good News From Washington According to USA Today, Veterans Affair Secretary, Anthony Principi, announced a new policy stating that the VA can fill prescriptions from private doctors for the first time. Some of our veterans had to wait months to see a VA doctor to get the medicine he or she needed. Now they can see a private doctor and go to the VA and get their prescription filled. This is good news. I know of a few veterans that had to go through the red tape and remained sick for months because of the ways of the VA. This new policy applies to veterans of all ages enrolled with the VA as of July 25, 2003. The greatest demand is among seniors who are on Medicare, which lacks a drug benefit. The Veterans Affairs Secretary also added he is considering all enrolled veterans to be permitted to fill privately written prescriptions at the VA in six months. Mr. Principi sought and received a ruling from the Justice Department that he has the authority to make this change. Finally someone has seen the light.
