Arbitration Training

By Sandra Munoz, HR Director/OWCP Specialist & Hollywood Steward

I feel extremely honored that our Broward County Area Local sent both Jeff Riddell and I to Arbitration Training that was held in Miami during the month of October.  Joyce Robinson, the Director of Education for our national APWU, was in charge of the training and was assisted by three of our current national arbitration advocates.  The training classes were incredibly intense.  We all put in long hours to learn the basics.  We actually prepared a mock arbitration in which each of the members from our assigned groups played a key part.  We worked on our homework assignments in teams and individually; sometimes running well into the evening hours.  All the time and effort really paid its dividends on the final day.  We all successfully completed our mock trial and received our graduating certificates for completing the class.

I left the arbitration training with great satisfaction after completing this course.  I hope one day in the near future to be able to represent this local in arbitrations both locally and nationally.  This course has taught me to be a better shop steward and to prepare my step 1 cases as if they were going into arbitration.  I hope to continue growing as a steward and I look forward to improving the way I serve the people of this local.

Did you know we currently have two National Advocates that come from the Broward County Area Local?  Those two advocates are Larry Nienow and Bruce Barrett.  I have always heard great things about both of them as stewards and as advocates.  A short time after concluding the arbitration training I had the opportunity to sit in as a technical advisor for one of Larry's arbitration cases.  I left that arbitration very impressed with his professionalism as well as his knowledge and expertise in this area. I felt proud to know that he was on our side.  If I ever need someone to represent any of my cases in arbitration, I would feel confident putting my cases in either one of their hands.  We are lucky as a local to have people who have the knowledge and who care and put forth such effort as Bruce and Larry do.
