Strange & Profound Truths By Carolyn Pierce, President Safety is important to all of us or is it?... Bill Pick is our Maintenance Craft Director and a steward on Tour 2 at the Plant. He is a trained OSHA deputy and a National APWU Safety Representative. We have requested that he be at each safety inspection that is processed in any office that we represent. At this time we are still negotiating this with the 8 cities we represent. Let me explain why I feel this is so important to all of us. Safety training and OSHA training are intense classroom study. All of us are not trained to inspect a building properly. If the Postal Service were as safety conscious and wished to prevent accidents it would seem logical to send trained personnel to do the inspections. Working in a safe environment is a necessity. In two Ft. Lauderdale offices, Coral Ridge and Galt Ocean (finance stations of Oakland Park Branch) a supervisor did a bogus safety inspection after the hurricane. I know that the safety program calls for union participation in these inspections. Our safety representative was not present at either inspection and this female supervisor CLEARED both of the offices. Needless to say, both of these offices have damage that was never repaired. One is water damage and mold and the other is a complete disaster. There should be no argument as to why we must have APWU and NALC trained representation at these safety checks. The Miami safety office and the Miami Division is now actively in the repairs to these sites. I hope the people who cleared these nasty unsafe buildings for active work for our members has no guilt or shame...I certainly would. |
