APATHY?... not in Local 1201 By Jeff Riddell, V.P. The definition of apathy: when someone is not interested in anything or willing to change things. I have written articles about this in the past and the corrosive thread it can weave. President Burrus wrote an article recently regarding the voting response to the current contract extension. The statistics show a National level of apathy. The number of people who participated by responding to the 220,000 mailed ballots was 78,964. That was an APATHETIC 35.9%. That means 141,036 dues paying members did not participate in having a say about their pay. This seems incredible, but it is true! Unionists in Latin America and other areas of the world are losing their lives or being imprisoned for trying to copy us. This Unionism is clearly being taken for granted in our National Union! This is not happening in Broward Area Local 1201. The member involvement in our recent election was astounding. We had 1124 members eligible to vote. 730 of our voting members returned their ballots. That is 64.9% of our members expressing themselves. Our local has every reason to be PROUD! This count of ballots show so much more about our membership than just an election. We have enthusiasm, interest, energy and the obvious desire to be heard and LEAD. The thread that binds us together is that WE VOTE!! We have shown how strong we are even if we differed on our choice of candidates. Now that our local election is over we can go back to being ONE> We will show National that we will continue to vote in a block as one, as always. To those who want our vote: DO YOU HEAR US? |
