Scheduled Sick Leave

By Sandra Munoz, OWCP Specialist & Hollywood Steward

After going to offices and speaking with a few employees, I have found that many of the employees are not clear on the policy of the USPS on pre-approved sick leave.  First of all, sick leave is a right that we have earned and fought for in the Union.  It is not something that is given to us, although management wants us to believe it is.  In the JCAM (joint agreement between the APWU and the USPS) it states that pre-approved sick leave is anything that is requested and approved in advance, but you should try to give management as much advance notice as possible.  If you have a doctor's appointment fill out a 3971 and request sick leave, annual leave or leave without pay (whichever you prefer).  Place the words "Doctor's Appointment" in the section where it asks for remarks.  Management cannot disapprove a sick leave request, and if it is approved in advance management cannot use it as an incident against you.  They do however have the right to request a doctor's note stating that you were seen in the office on that day, and most likely will.  If you have any problems or questions, contact your Shop Steward or the Union Hall.
