Strange but profound truths By Carolyn Pierce, President 1-800-are you a postal worker? The IVR, Interactive Voice Recognition System, is now being used in the Miami Division. Nationally, the APWU has filed a dispute over this system with the Postal service. The APWU has stated that the Postal Service is violating the National Agreement in the use of this call-in number. Remember that a machine just takes your information. A supervisor makes the final decisions concerning your leave. If the computer requested that you call in every day or that you must submit documentation improperly, see your steward. You can read the entire argument on this subject by going to www.apwu.org and clicking on the Industrial Relations page. Holiday Leave . . . Did you know that you could elect to receive a day of annual leave, to be used in the future, in lieu of being paid for working a holiday? I met one of our members today, who did not know they had this option and could really use the extra annual leave later in the year. It does not matter if you are mandated or if you volunteer to work the holiday in order to receive the option. All you need to do is use a PS3971 to notify management that you wish to elect annual leave instead of holiday leave pay. The block labeled "other" under type of absence should be checked and words "elect annual leave in lieu of holiday leave" written in the remarks section. If you have any other questions. . . see a steward. Peace, CJP |
